I created ‘Se Hati’, (Indonesian for 'One Heart’) while living on the white sandy shores of Gili Meno island in Indonesia. The sand and shells in this piece were collected from the shores of the surrounding turquoise blue Balinese sea.
True to its name, ‘Se Hati’ was created not only by me, but also by the collective heart of the people of the island. From the time that I began working on this artwork, ‘Se Hati’ took on a life of its own.
As I was on the beach one morning, collecting shells to use in this piece, I was joined by a local boy who began gathering shells alongside me. A short while later, we were joined by another friend, and then a mother and her young daughter who were passing by. Not speaking the same verbal language, we silently gathered the shells together, communicating only with our smiling faces and open hearts. A few more new friends came and went, contributing handfuls of the shiny white shells that they happily gathered from the beach to give to me.
Later that day, as I glued each of those shells onto the reclaimed wood panel given to me to use by another island friend, I thought about the generosity, kindness and love that was extended to me by the people of Gili Meno, not only on that day, but in each of the 5 months that I spent on their beautiful island. I was an outsider, yet they had lovingly accepted me into their community and treated me as their own.
This artwork reflects the kindness of a small Indonesian Island where I learned about the collective heart of all things. Here, just as in ALL of the universe, everyone is an individual part of the Greater Whole, and we each are a part of one another. We share One Heart…’Se Hati’.
Created with sand and shells collected from the shores of Gili Meno Island, Indonesia + oil paint on a framed wooden panel gifted from the people of Gili Meno Island.
